The Resilient Department Cohort Program
Departments don’t become resilient by accident. They get there through steady, deliberate choices by the people inside them, often people without formal authority. The Resilient Department Cohort Program is a four-month cohort for faculty and staff who want to strengthen how their department handles pressure, conflict and change. Each month, you’ll choose one concrete thing to work on, try it, and bring what happened back to a small group led by a consultant who knows academic departments from the inside.
Open to faculty, department chairs and departmental staff.
Unable to use a P-card for your registration? Choose “Pay by Invoice” during checkout and we will send you an invoice that can be paid by your institution. Once that payment is received you will have access to the content on Learn.KardiaGroup.
Come As a Team
Change is easier when you’re not doing it alone. When you enroll with colleagues from your department, research group or institute, your team receives private consulting time focused on your specific situation:
- 2 people: one 45-minute session
- 3 people: one 90-minute session
- 4 people: two 60-minute sessions

Start with where your department is. Before the first session, you’ll take our free departmental resilience assessment and a short reflective survey. Try the assessment now: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TheResilientDepartmentPrgm
-
Meet monthly with a small group. Four one-hour sessions with 4–10 participants and an experienced consultant:
- The first explores what you noticed and why resilience matters.
- The second and third go deeper into resilience and into the efforts you’re making.
-
The fourth pulls it together and sets your next steps.
-
Pick one thing. After each session, you’ll choose one practical step to take in your department over the next month.
-
Work with a buddy. You’ll be paired with an accountability partner from another institution, who will check in on your progress and offer an outside perspective.
-
Prepare between sessions. Short online materials and guided reflections before each session help you think through what’s happening and what to try next.
Lasting change in a department rarely comes from a single workshop. It comes from small, deliberate steps, honest reflection on what happened, and people who hold you to your intentions.
That’s why the program meets monthly, pairs you with a buddy, and centers each session on what you actually tried – and what you’ll do next. Your consultant brings deep experience with academic departments and tailors each session to the situations and choices of the people in the group.
“The collective experience of other teams working alongside is very powerful to keep forward progress.”
Kardia Group has worked with academic departments for more than 20 years. This approach draws on an earlier, more intensive NSF-funded program in which we served as subject matter experts, guiding department teams from five universities through year-long change efforts. An outside evaluator measured the results:
- Confidence in knowing how to create organizational change rose from 58% to 92%
- Confidence in marshaling resources for change rose from 31% to 67%
- Participants who had taken no action to improve interactions in their department fell from 37% to 4%
“[Meeting monthly] keeps us focused on the project in the face of competing urgencies.”
“Seemingly small victories can effect more change than we realize.”
