Mitigate Reactivity

Format: Asynchronous
Time: 45-60 minutes on your own

Our ability to respond depends on our ability to think clearly, calmly, and critically. To do so, we need to be prepared to mitigate reactivity.

Reactivity is the result of how our brain and nervous system depend on cognitive shortcuts. These shortcuts influence what we think, how we interact, the decisions we make, and the actions we take.

“Most of us feel like we have reasons for what we are doing. But in fact we do what we are doing largely because of reasons that we’re not necessarily completely aware of.” - Daniel Kahneman, Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

Take this course to learn when and how a cognitive shortcut becomes a problem and what you can do about it.

  1. Understanding of both the inevitability and usefulness of cognitive shortcuts ("fast thought")
  2. Insight into circumstances where those useful shortcuts may lead us astray
  3. Awareness of a set of common reactivities produced by cognitive shortcuts
  4. Strategies for identifying those moments and mitigating their effect ("slow thought")
  • You had a recent experience where the immediacy, strength, or nature of your response to a situation surprised you.
  • You find yourself making quick decisions or saying things that you later wish you had considered more, and wonder where that comes from and how to change it.
  • You are intentionally seeking to broaden your perspective and ability to communicate well with others
