Time: 6 hours on your own
Shareable Certificate of Completion

Effective shared governance relies on skills and capacities seldom emphasized in graduate school. That’s why we’ve developed a Certificate in Shared Governance. It’s a series of interesting, smart, and actionable online courses that support the four foundational aspects of effective shared governance.

The four foundational aspects of effective shared governance:

     1. Cultivate great discussions.

     2. Mitigate reactivity.

     3. Engage multiple perspectives.

     4. Approach conflict constructively.

Our Shared Governance Certificate is a self-paced program deeply informed by research. It translates that research into practical actions available to anyone. Throughout the coursework, take advantage of assessments to customize these strategies to your own style and experience.

A version of this curriculum was utilized by the National Science Foundation for five years as an investment in improved peer review discussions related to grant funding.

No prior coursework is needed, and you can complete each course on your own schedule.

Here are just a few things you'll learn from the 7 courses in this certificate program:

* How discussion styles shape interactions, and where your own preferences fall

* Specific discussion behaviors that lead to better participation and outcomes

* How structure and focus contribute to great discussions, and what type of conflict is the best

* What inhibits us from speaking up when a discussion goes awry, and ways around those inhibitions

* Where reactivity comes from, plus strategies for slowing down

* A framework for understanding conflict and using each approach constructively

* How to bring your own perspective fully to a discussion while drawing out others’ contributions

* Where your own habitual responses to conflict fall across the five Thomas-Kilmann modes, and which you may over- or underuse
